About

AdviceOnly provides advice-only financial planning services to individuals, high-net-worth clients, and businesses through ongoing, project-based, and hourly engagements. The firm does not manage client assets, does not accept custody of client funds, and does not participate in wrap fee programs.

When engaged, AdviceOnly gathers clients’ financial information and makes recommendations tailored to goals, time horizons, and risk tolerance, with a primary emphasis on passive investment strategies implemented via index mutual funds and ETFs. Planners deliver written or electronic financial plans, periodic reviews, and one-on-one support, while leaving trade execution and broker selection to clients.

Compared with many firms classified as investment managers, AdviceOnly is notable for operating multiple offices and for formal affiliations with the Garrett Planning Network Alliance and an Advice Only planners association, as well as being organized as a Public Benefit Corporation and subscribing to the Real Fiduciary™ Practices. The firm’s use of hourly and project-based planning engagements—and its absence of percentage-of-AUM management or custody—is atypical relative to the common AUM-centered business model among peers.

Thank you for viewing my profile! Here's a little about me: I'm a husband, happily married (out of my league!) to the love of my life. I'm also a father of three amazing kids. I'm an avid audiobook listener and love to play and write music. People often ask how I got started in the financial industry. It all began when I was just 15 years old, working as a teller at our small-town bank in Spring Hill, Kansas. Let's just say I caused a bit of a stir, and the age requirement has since been raised! But I'm eternally grateful to Sharon for taking a chance on me and showing me the ropes of professionalism. After meeting my soulmate and getting married, I landed a job with Fidelity Investments through a referral. I'm indebted to that company and the incredible people I worked with for teaching me, correcting me, and showing me the true meaning of caring for clients. My favorite mentor and role model was Marty. His clients were always thrilled to see him, and he genuinely loved seeing them too. He had such a positive attitude, listened intently, and constantly pushed himself to improve. It was inspiring to watch. He operated with integrity, empathy, and precision. I aspired to become an advisor and run a business just like Marty. Today, I work with couples and families like my own – people who are passionate about their jobs and businesses and want the best for their loved ones. Every day, I get to listen to their stories, understand their values, and translate them into comprehensive financial plans. The work we do together gives them confidence, peace of mind, and a newfound sense of financial security. I'm excited to get to know you and help you achieve your family's goals. Let me know, what are some of your family's financial goals? I'd love to hear about them!

I help family caregivers navigate the complexities of managing both their own financial goals and their loved ones’ care through my Caregiver Resource Group, alongside financial planning services offered through AdviceOnly.com. Caregiving often means juggling competing priorities—your personal finances, future plans, and the costs and logistics of caring for someone else. I work with you to untangle these complexities, providing personalized guidance and actionable steps to create a plan that fits your unique situation. Through The FamilyCare Navigation Plan, consisting of group coaching, resources, and a supportive community, I offer a space for caregivers to share experiences, gain practical insights, and feel less alone in their journey. Whether it’s navigating day-to-day caregiving expenses or planning for your financial future, I help you bring clarity and control to both sides of the equation—yours and your loved one’s. My financial planning approach focuses on navigating the unique challenges of caregiving by strategically capitalizing on both your finances and your loved one’s resources. This includes identifying and leveraging additional support such as government programs, employer benefits, and other available resources to help ease the financial and logistical burdens of caregiving. Together, we’ll create a comprehensive plan to manage caregiving costs, protect financial stability, and align your family’s financial picture with your long-term goals. You don’t have to do it all on your own. With the right resources, support, and expert planning, you can find balance and move forward with confidence.

Thanks for checking out my profile! Here's a little about me: I'm happily married to the love of my life who somehow hasn't realized how far out of my league she is (so please don't tell her). When not working, I’m probably chasing after our two amazing kids who keep life loud and full in the best ways, or experimenting with new vegan curry recipes, or injuring myself trying to get back into a workout routine since I refuse to accept that I’m no longer a 20-something Marine. I'm often asked how I got into financial planning. After the military, I headed to San Diego State University not knowing what my next steps would be, but knowing that I 1) wanted to do meaningful work that could genuinely help people, 2) had a strong interest in finance, and 3) was compelled to continue my lifelong string of side projects and small businesses I kept finding myself in. Smashing those together led to becoming a CFP® and founding Next Gen Financial Planning to serve clients often overlooked by our profession, giving me the chance to help hundreds of people navigate their financial and life journeys. Along the way, I did my best to learn from every financial planner in San Diego or elsewhere who would answer my calls or emails. Jim taught me the importance of truly listening to clients before offering solutions. Michael showed me how to think like a business owner, not just an advisor. Nancy taught me that sales can be ethical and fun. Taylor showed me the power of community and supporting each other as we grow. I'm deeply grateful to them, and to the many others who helped me get here. Next Gen grew up to be bigger than just me, and I passed the torch over to the team in 2024. Now I'm excited to set my sights on a new mission with AdviceOnly because it's time for change, not just for me but in how our profession treats both financial advisors and the clients we serve. I’m building a new model to help advisors focus on giving advice, not sales pitches. Too many are overwhelmed by compliance/tech/admin, or feel lonely, or pressured to put the firm's financial performance over their sense of what’s right. Quick note: I'm not currently taking on new ongoing financial planning clients while focusing on building the AdviceOnly platform to support other advisors, so please consider checking out www.adviceonly.com or another credible place. I do still take on an occasional small hourly projects.
