Two things, and the second one is the reason I actually did something about it. The first was Mike Finley. I was in college studying accounting when I first heard him explain fee-only advice — that you could get paid by the client, only by the client, with nothing to sell. I didn't know that was an option. Everything I'd seen up to that point was somebody selling a product and calling it advice. That stuck with me. The second one is personal. Early in our marriage my wife and I put money away for the kids — education accounts, the whole thing. We did what you're supposed to do. We saved when it wasn't easy, and we didn't touch it. Then we went to use it. And there was almost nothing there. Nobody lied to us. It was all disclosed somewhere, in language nobody reads. The fees and the commissions just quietly ate what we'd put away, year after year, and we never had a real chance to see it happening. And so that's why Ignite is flat-fee. You pay us a number you can see, and it doesn't change because your account got bigger. I've been on the wrong side of that table. I'm not going to put somebody else there.
I'm Mike Dunlop, a CFP® in Cedar Falls, Iowa. I run Ignite Financial with Casey Redmond, CFP®.
We're fee-only and flat-fee. You pay a set number, and that's it — no commissions, no percentage of your nest egg, nothing to sell you. I built the firm this way because I got tired of watching good people pay for advice that had a sales pitch buried in it. If your portfolio doubles, our work doesn't double, so our fee shouldn't either.
Most of the people we work with are about five years out from retirement or already there. A lot of them are Iowa public employees trying to make sense of IPERS — when the Rule of 88 actually hits, which payout option to take, what the taxes do to it. We spend a lot of time on Social Security timing and Roth conversions too, because a big pre-tax account is kind of a ticking time bomb once RMDs show up. We have to pay our share, but we don't have to leave Uncle Sam a tip.
I was trained as an accountant, so my numbers run conservative. Both Casey and I have the heart of a teacher — if you don't understand what we're doing, you won't trust it, and you shouldn't.

We'll help you think it through—whether you ultimately need an advisor or not. Warmer helps you compare advisors clearly, so you can choose with confidence.
For advisor listings, we rely on sources including public filings and data provided by advisors, and we cannot guarantee that all information is current or accurate. Advisors are independent and may not have reviewed or updated this information. Please review an advisor’s Form ADV and do your own diligence before deciding whether to work with them.
Advisor matching and introductions are provided by FinanceHQ LLC (“FHQ”), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Warmer and an SEC-registered investment advisor. We receive compensation from certain participating advisors for introductions or referrals. This creates a conflict of interest because we have an incentive to recommend advisors who compensate us, including those who pay us more. You pay no fee to use our matching service, and advisor fees are not increased because of a referral or introduction. We do not review the ongoing performance of advisors, manage or hold assets, guarantee performance, or provide advice about specific investments.
By using our service, you agree to our Terms of Service and Advisory Agreement, and acknowledge our Privacy Policy. Please review FHQ’s ADV Part 2A and Form CRS. Logos provided by Logo.dev
